Flights to Macedonia

With its soaring mountains, historic ruins, and buzzing cities, the Republic of Macedonia is a hidden gem well worth discovering. It’s one of the few unexplored corners of Europe, with mass tourism yet to move in. It’s only a matter of time, though, as Macedonia has so much to offer. Enjoy winter sports near Krushevo, or visit the wineries in the Demir Kapija Valley. Enjoy the lively atmosphere of Skopje, or go hiking in the scenic hills outside Mavrovo. Add friendly and hospitable locals who are always ready to share a joke or a meal, and you’ll realise that travellers who take the time to discover Macedonia are definitely in for a treat.

International travellers visiting Macedonia will fly in to one of two airports in the country.

Skopje Alexander the Great Airport (SKP)

It’s no surprise that the largest and busiest airport in Macedonia should serve the capital city. Skopje is a lively and exciting city, with plenty of Ottoman influence. It’s home to the largest old bazaar in the Balkans, traditional hammam bathhouses, and plenty of mosques and ancient churches. The city was the birthplace of Mother Teresa, and you can find a museum dedicated to the saint in the city centre. Take a drive out of the city for gorgeous mountains and the stunning Lake Matke. Wizz Air is the only airline currently flying direct to Skopje, although it’s possible to catch a connecting flight from other Western European cities.

Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD)

The second largest airport in the country sits 6 miles outside Ohrid, one of the top places to visit in Macedonia. The city itself has a beautiful old town, complete with a medieval castle. It’s known for having 365 churches, lending it the nickname “Jerusalem of the Balkans”. There’s plenty for nature lovers, with Galičica National Park offering plenty of hiking and the sparkling Lake Ohrid offering watersports and chilled out beaches. During August the city plays host to a summer music festival. Unfortunately there are no direct flights to Ohrid from the UK. You can catch connecting flights in Western European airports such as Amsterdam, Vienna, and Brussels.
