Svalbard is cold year round, with peak average temperatures of around 4 °C in July and August and an average of -14 °C in the winter. In the winter, the coastal waters freeze over. For your safety, the government strictly regulates trips outside of Management Area 10, the relatively safe zone within a few hundred miles of Longyearbyen. Outside this area, guests must either plan expeditions well in advance or hire tour guides. Interesting sites well within the public area include the Pyramiden, an old Russian mining town and present-day hotel, as well as restaurants, hiking, and boating opportunities.

Finally, no trip to Svalbard would be complete without a quick visit to the Svalbard Seed Vault, which guards all the seeds of the world. Although guests are not permitted inside for security reasons, you can take pictures of the outer door on your way to or from the airport.
