Geneva Cointrin International Airport (GVA) is the city's only airport. It's located 2.5 miles northwest of the city centre. Straddling the Franco-Swiss border, Geneva airport can be accessed from both countries and is a popular choice for people planning a skiing holiday in the Alps. Private coaches and transfer options are available to ski slopes in both countries. The airport has two terminals: the second is only used during the winter, for charter flights. Getting to the city from the airport is fairly hassle free. As well as car hire options and taxis there's plenty of public transport. It takes about 6 minutes to reach the city centre by train, and buses regularly pick up and drop off outside the check-in area. When you arrive in Geneva you can get a free Unireso public transport ticket, which is valid on the city's public transport system for up to 80 minutes. When to go to Geneva
The most popular time to visit Geneva is during winter: AKA ski season. This lasts from December to April. If you're looking for hotels in Geneva at this time of year we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment. Christmas, Easter and the February half-term are when prices jump. Summer is a good time to visit, especially if you like water sports. Lake Geneva draws crowds at this time of year and the summer temperatures are very pleasant: usually in the low to mid-twenties. January is the coldest month and July is the hottest: you can expect an average temperature of 20°C during July and 2°C during January. The average temperature starts to creep above 10°C in May and stays pleasant until November. There's a huge difference between autumn and winter in Geneva, with a 6°C drop in average temperatures between October and November. September and October are the wettest months, although you can expect rain all year round.
What to see and do in Geneva
When you're not swooshing down the slopes or skimming across the lake, there's plenty to occupy your time in this gorgeous city. The city's impressive sights will have your Instagram grid looking fantastic, and that's before mentioning the chocolate.
In terms of science and politics no city break can beat Geneva. Visit the United Nations Office of Geneva to see where some of the world's biggest decisions are made, or pop over to CERN to see where some of the world's biggest questions are in the process of being answered. Guided tours are available, but you'll only be allowed to visit the Large Hadron Collider when it's not in use.
Shopping in Geneva is excellent, with everything from swanky boutiques to artisan workshops. The Plainpalais flea market is one of the largest in Switzerland, and is a great place to pick up unique souvenirs. If you feel like you deserve a treat after saving so much money on your flight, trot down to the Rue du Rhône. This glitzy street is home to some seriously fancy designer shops and famous watchmakers.
If you over-indulge in the city's speakeasy cocktail bars or world class restaurants, you can set yourself right easily in Geneva. Pamper yourself with a sauna-sesh at Bains des Pâquis, a 1930's swimming bath right by the lake, or simply wander through the verdant Parc des Bastions.
