The Gambia’s capital city is a popular winter sun destination thanks to its beautiful beaches. The low-key capital itself is worth a look in, thanks to its unique island location, but most of the visitors head straight to the excellent beach resorts. Bustling Kotu, peaceful Bijilo, and traditional Bakau are just a few of the main coastal destinations and are all ideal for a relaxing break.
Airports in Banjul
Banjul International Airport (BJL) is the main airport serving the city and its coastal resorts. It’s sometimes known as Yundum International. The airport’s biggest claim to fame is being selected as an augmented landing site by NASA, so if any space shuttles needed to make an emergency landing they could do so at the airport. You’ll be glad to hear your flight won’t be diverted due to any stray rockets: the arrangement ended in 2001 due to a change in launch trajectory.
Airlines that fly to Banjul
Gambia Bird fly direct from Britain to Banjul all year round, while Monarch Airlines and Thomas Cook Airlines both offer seasonal charter flights during the winter months.
Getting into Banjul
Many of the hotels on the coast offer a free shuttle service to and from the airport. It’s worth checking this before booking accommodation. You can also hire a car at the airport, from Hertz or a variety of other local companies.
Fixed rate taxis are available outside the terminal. You can find a price list posted on the wall with prices to all of the most popular destinations: do confirm this with your driver before jumping in the cab. It should cost around 200-300 Dalasi*(about £3.10-£4.70) to get into Bakau, Kololi or Katu. If you’re travelling into Banjul itself you should be paying 400-500 Dalasi* (roughly £6.30-£7.80).
