Edmonton International Airport offers easy access to route 2, a main highway travelling north towards Edmonton city and south towards Leduc. The area’s road networks are largely built upon a grid system, both in and out of cities, so it’s difficult to get too lost.

Whilst the bigger cities can get busy at rush hours, the roads around Central Alberta are generally congestion free. However, if you’re travelling during winter months, driving can be slow going. You’ll need to ensure your car is equipped with winter gear including snow chains and check weather reports for any road closures.

Edmonton

Edmonton city is a 30 minute drive from Edmonton International Airport, taking route 2 north. The majority of streets in Edmonton run on a grid system, north to south and east to west. However, some older neighbourhoods were built on a diagonal system. As long as you’re aware of this, the city is easy to navigate. There are big car parks and street parking spaces available throughout the city centre. If you’d prefer to avoid navigating the down town area, there are also a number of Park and Ride locations on the outskirts and an inexpensive public transport system throughout the centre.

Red Deer

Red Deer is a city that emerged from an old trading post on the road between Edmonton and Calgary. The city hosts a regular rodeo and boasts lots of cultural history. The Red Deer Museum & Art Gallery is a great place to discover more about the region. A vibrant arts and live music scene, local nature parks and the Wild Rapids Waterslide Park are just a few other attractions that bring visitors to Red Deer.

Red Deer is around 75 minutes’ drive from Edmonton International Airport, taking route 2 south. There are a number of car parks around the city centre area, ranging from $0.80 to $1.20 per hour. Pay and display street parking is likely to cost you a similar amount although there are often time limitations in place too.

Brazeau County

Brazeau County is the place to go for outdoor activities. The district is home to lakes and three rivers so there are plenty of swimming, fishing and paddling spots. Hiking and cycling trails are also popular in the summer months while in the winter, visitors can ski, snowmobile or go ice fishing.

Brazeau County is around 75 minutes’ drive west of Edmonton International Airport. Drivers should take route 2 south and then pick up route 39 west. There is easy parking in the various towns and villages around the district.
