Driving around Udon Thani Airport
Udon Thani Airport sits close to route 210, a road which travels southwest towards Nong Bua Lam Phu and north to join route 2. Route 2 is a major road which travels south to Udon Thani and Khon Kaen as well as north towards Nong Khai and the border with Laos.
You need to have an International Driving Permit to drive in Thailand. This is different to your standard international driving license and you’ll need to apply in advance of your trip to either the RAC, the AA or the post office. Permits are valid for up to 12 months after the date of issue and cost around £5.00.

Udon Thani is the fourth largest city in Thailand. It’s home to ancient temples, a variety of local markets and lots of city centre parks. Visitors can sample delicious street food, enjoy the atmosphere at a lively karaoke bar or take a tour of the city in a tuk tuk.
It takes around 10 minutes to drive from Udon Thani Airport to Udon Thani city, taking route 210 south and then heading towards Pranthong Village. The 210 and route 2 form a rough ring road around the city which can aid navigation. There are plenty of places to park in the city centre but traffic can be chaotic so it may be worth looking for a space on the outskirts of town.
Phu Phra Bat National Park
Phu Phra Bat Historical Park is located near the town of Ban Phu. It’s home to large and mystical rock formations and lots of beautiful scenery. Dating back more than 3000 years, it offers a slice of Thai history and an atmospheric place to spend an afternoon.
It takes around 80 minutes to drive from Udon Thani Airport to Phu Phra Bat Historical Park, taking route 2 north and then route 2021 northwest. There’s car parking space available at the entrance to the park.
Ban Chiang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s home to a range of archaeological discoveries including burial sites, bracelets, and spearheads dating back to the Bronze Age. There’s also a visitor centre where you can learn more about the artefacts.
Ban Chiang is around 50 minutes’ drive from Udon Thani Airport, taking route 210 into the city and then branching off onto route 22. There’s a car park on site for visitors.
