Car Hire from Tallinn Airport

Car Hire from Tallinn Airport

Tallinn Airport is located in Northern Estonia. It’s a great starting point for a road trip exploring this wild and scenic part of the country. The vibrant city of Tallinn, the country’s largest national park, fantastic beaches and traditional local villages are all close by and easy to get to when you hire a car from the airport.

Where to hire a car at Tallinn Airport

There are several companies offering car hire services from Tallinn Airport. Avis, Sixt, Budget, Europcar, NU Car Rentals and Hertz all have offices based inside the terminal building and can be found in the arrivals hall.

Petrol Stations near Tallinn Airport

There are a couple of petrol stations located in Tallinn city centre. For drivers who would rather avoid the city centre, there’s a Statoil Fuel service station, just off A. H. Tammsaare tee, eight minutes’ drive southwest of the airport. Heading in the opposite direction, there’s a Statoil Mustakivi service station 10 minutes’ drive from the airport on Laagna tee.

Driving around Tallinn Airport

Tallinn Airport is well-connected by local road routes. It sits on route 2 which travels north into the centre of Tallinn and south towards Pildkula and Saula. The airport is also close to route 1 (or the E20), which travels east to Kuusalu and Rakvere.
You can drive in Estonia with your standard UK international driving license. Roads are generally in good condition but driving standards are unpredictable and aggressive driving is not uncommon. Drivers need to have headlights turned on at all times, even during the day, and take extra care on the roads during winter months (from October to April) when it’s often very snowy and temperatures drop well below freezing.
It is illegal to drink any alcohol before driving in Estonia with fines and prison sentences given to those found over the legal limit of zero.

Getting to your destination

Hiring a car from Tallinn Airport allows you to see more of Estonia. Here are a few destinations within easy reach of the airport:

Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. The city has a medieval city centre of cobbled streets and atmospheric alley ways which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are lots of impressive buildings to admire in the old town and attractions including the National Art Museum, Tallinn Zoo and Kadriorg Palace in the new town.
It takes around 10 minutes to drive from Tallinn Airport to Tallinn city centre, depending upon the time of day and traffic levels. Route 2 provides the most direct journey. There are lots of one way roads in the city so a good map would be very useful.
Drivers will find plenty of parking spaces around the city centre, all of which are free for the first 15 minutes. Most hire cars come with a clock for the dashboard which allows drivers to indicate the start of their 15 minute slot. Parking tickets are usually available from a parking attendant who wears a brightly coloured orange jacket.

Lahemaa National Park

Laheema is Estonia’s first and largest national park. The park boasts sandy beaches, pine forests, rivers that cut through limestone cliff and scenic bogs. There are lots of hiking and cycling trails around the park and lots of flora and fauna to discover. Visitors can also come across ancient villages located on the limestone cliff.
Lahemaa National Park is around 45 minutes’ drive from Tallinn Airport, taking route 1 east and heading towards the coast at Kuusalu. Car parking in the park is easy and there are various routes allowing you to drive through it.

Kaberneeme is a seaside village located east of Tallinn city. It’s a small place, popular for its two kilometre long beach, backed by pine forests and enjoying some of the best sunsets in Estonia. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing, swimming and sailing along the beach or hiking through the surrounding forest.
It takes just over 30 minutes to drive from Tallinn Airport to Kaberneeme, taking route 1 and then route 260. The village is made up of just a few roads so it’s very easy to find your way around.
