Where to hire a car at Tenerife North Airport
There are a number of car hire companies operating at Tenerife North Airport. These include Auto Reisen, Cicar, Avis, Hertz, Europcar and Goldcar. All car hire desks are located inside the terminal building. They can be found just beyond the baggage reclaim area in the arrivals hall.
Petrol Stations near Tenerife North Airport
If your car hire agreement has a full to full fuel policy you will need to ensure you refuel it before returning it. The closest petrol station to Tenerife North Airport is a BP garage located five minutes’ drive away. It can be accessed by turning right out of the airport onto the TF-5 road.
Driving around Tenerife North Airport
The TF-5 is the main road running to and from the airport. It travels southwest towards Tacoronte and Puerto de la Cruz, and east to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Heading east, it also connects to another major route across the island, the TF-1 which travels down the coast to Las Caletillas, Punta Prieta and Los Cristianos.
The road rules in Tenerife are the same as on mainland Spain. Cars drive on the right hand side of the road, the drink drive limit is 0.5 and there are a limited number of speed cameras across the island. If you’re travelling up to Mount Teide, you’ll need to be prepared for winding, narrow roads and some hairpin bends. Roads are generally in very good condition and there are plenty of free parking spaces around the resorts.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island’s capital. The small city has a decidedly Spanish flavour and visitors will come across brightly painted buildings, tasty cuisine and a great city park. There are also lots of museums, shops and bars to discover.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is just 20 minutes’ drive from Tenerife North Airport, taking the TF-5 east and all the way into the city centre. There are a number of large car parks in the centre (the one on the waterfront is particularly easy to find) and lots of street parking too.
Garachico is a small town located well off the tourist track. It is situated in a valley, surrounded by forested hills and close to the rocky coastline. Whilst the town doesn’t have a beach, visitors can take dip in natural volcanic pools. There are lots of scenic hiking trails nearby and a handful of eateries and bars in the town of whitewashed buildings and cobbled streets.
It takes just under an hour to get to Garachico from Tenerife North Airport. Drivers should take the TF-5 southwest and then pick up the TF-42 along the coast. The town is small and easy to navigate although some narrow roads are a bit of a squeeze.
Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz is a pretty seaside resort boasting boardwalks, shallow waters and a picturesque central square. There are lots of traditional restaurants and upmarket shops and a wealth of activities on offer. Visitors can head to Loro Parque to see parrots, penguins and the biggest dolphinarium in Europe, go for a swim in the elegant swimming pools at Lago Martianez or watch a flamenco show at popular venue, Tenerife Palace.
Puerto de la Cruz is 25 minutes’ drive from Tenerife North Airport, taking the TF-5 west and later picking up the TF-312 into the town centre. There are a number of car parks and street car parking spaces around the town. The most convenient is probably the Parque Maritimo car park. It’s located in the town centre, offers unlimited free parking and is close to both the beach and the town centre attractions.
