Where to hire a car at Shannon Airport
Six car rental firms are based at Shannon Airport: Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise, Thrifty, Avis, and Budget. The car hire desks are on the ground floor of the airport. The pre-booked car hire desk is beside the taxi desk and amusement arcade.
Petrol stations near Shannon Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
There are lots of petrol stations in Ennis, as well as a service station in Shannon Town. If you’re coming from the east you’ll find plenty of service stations along the E20.
Driving around Shannon Airport
The road leaving the airport connects onto the M18 (west) and the E20 (east). Make sure you know which exit you need to take to reach to your destination.
Getting to your destination
The very first Irish City of Culture, Limerick has a pleasant combination of historic buildings, lively pubs, and a fantastic arts scene.
It takes less than half an hour to reach Limerick from Shannon Airport using the E20 motorway. Using the smaller N roads will add a few minutes onto your journey time. You need a parking disc to park on the street in Limerick: these are available from the Cash Office in Merchant’s Quay and from a range of retail outlets in the city centre. To pay for on-street parking you need to register with ParkMagic. Alternatively you can use the multi-storey car parks, which are widely available in the city centre.
Great shopping, fab restaurants, and plenty of hotels make Ennis the perfect base for exploring Clare. It also helps that Ennis is within two hours drive of most of the county’s top sights.
It takes about 20 minutes to reach Ennis from the airport, heading west on the M18. All of the car parks and on-street bays in Ennis are pay and display from Monday to Saturday (aside from bank holidays). You can use ParkMagic to pay for parking if you don’t have change for the meters.
Famous for its matchmaking festival, this west coast town also makes a great base for trips to the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands.
It takes just under an hour to reach Lisdoonvarna from Shannon Airport. There are no fees or restrictions for on-street parking. It can be very difficult to find a space during the festival (from the end of August to the start of October) so if you’re driving to the town it’s best to look for a hotel with its own private car park.
