Driving around Skelleftea Airport
The E4, Sweden's 'highway backbone', passes near the airport. This road runs north to south throughout the country, ending at the border with Finland. Despite its importance, the road is quite small and is a single carriageway during this section. Traffic in Sweden drives on the right-hand side of the road.
Getting to your destination
Religious history abounds in this coastal town: must-sees include the medieval Virgin of Skelleftea wooden statue and the charming log houses of Bonnstan, once home to the devout. The town itself offers plenty of urban buzz whilst within striking distance of some of Sweden's most remote and beautiful scenery.
It takes about 20 minutes to drive into downtown Skelleftea from the airport. Most accommodation in the area offers free and secure parking, ideal if you've chosen to hire a car.
Buzzing with student life and blessed with a fantastic cultural scene, Umea is a cosmopolitan oasis in the stark north. The 'town of silver birches' also has plenty of fantastic music festivals, covering everything from jazz to heavy metal.
If you can't find cheap flights to Umea you can drive from Skelleftea Airport. It takes about an hour and a half to reach the city centre. On-street parking in town costs money, the fee depending on the zone. There are also some privately run multi-storey car parks. The city centre is easy to wander around on foot. If your hotel is centrally located make sure it has its own parking lot. You won't need your car to discover the city's highlights, and having a private car park at the hotel will save you plenty of time and money.
Lulea is known for its friendly atmosphere, student buzz, and hi-tech industries. The city has a good range of bars and restaurants and is a fantastic base for exploring the archipelego and the beaches of the Bothnian Coast.
If there are no cheap flights to Lulea Kallax available you can rent a car and drive from Skelleftea. It only takes about an hour and forty minutes to drive to Lulea from Skelleftea Airport. Once you arrive you will find plenty of hotels with private parking lots where you can leave your car while you get to know the city.
