Driving around Rochester Airport
Rochester Airport is open 24 hours a day. From the airport, it’s easy to join route 204, which heads east towards route 390 and west towards route 490. Route 390 travels south towards Henrietta and Mount Morris and also north along the western side of Rochester city centre. Route 490 provides a direct route into the city centre and out towards Churchville and the New York State Thruway (a toll road for most of its length).
Driving around Rochester and the state of New York is easy and safe as long as you’re aware of the rules. In the state of New York you can often turn right at a red light after first coming to a complete stop and checking for vehicles and pedestrians. At intersections you should give right of way to the vehicle that approached the intersection first. Rochester is fairly big city that has managed to retain a small town charm. It sits on the banks of Lake Ontario and boasts a number of visitor attractions. It takes around 15 minutes to get to Rochester city centre from Rochester Airport. Drivers should turn right onto route 204, take the 390 north and then pick up route 490 into the centre.
Rochester has a variety of street parking and designated car parks to choose from. Street parking is free after 6pm and all day at weekends. During weekdays it costs around $1.50 per hour. There are lots of 24 hour parking lots in the city too with very reasonable charges of around $5.00 per day.
Canandaigua is a small city, southeast of Rochester Airport. It sits on the shores of Canandaigua Lake and offers a range of outdoor activities including water sports, hiking and cycling. In winter, visitors can ski at Bristol Mountain, whilst in summer there’s Roseland Waterpark with rides and slides.
Canandaigua is around 40 minutes’ drive from Rochester Airport. Drivers can take route 390 south and then pick up route 90 east. There are a number of short term and long term municipal car parks in Canandaigua, all offering free parking.
Seneca Falls is widely regarded as the inspiration for the setting of film It’s A Wonderful Life. This small town is home to the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Visitors can also learn about the town’s industry at the Waterways and Industry Museum or see some local wildlife at the Montezuma National Refuge.
It takes just over an hour to drive from Rochester Airport to Seneca Falls, taking route 390 south and route 90 east. Parking around the town is plentiful although in winter, there are restrictions to street parking to allow for snow clearing.
