Seven car hire companies currently offer car hire from Missoula Airport: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty. Their desks can be found inside the terminal building, opposite the arrivals hall. Dollar are located off-site, but do offer car hire from the airport.
Petrol stations near Missoula Airport
If you select a 'full to full' car rental agreement you will need to hand your car back with a full tank.
There's a Mobil petrol station just off Airway Boulevard, just after you leave the I-90 for the airport.
Driving around Missoula Airport
Traffic in America drives on the right-hand side of the road. This might take a bit of getting used to if you don't drive abroad very often. The I-90 (Seattle to Boston) motorway is just a few minutes away from the airport by car. If you're driving into Missoula it's possible to avoid the highway altogether.
Getting to your destination
A university town with rural flair, Missoula is often considered Montana's most liberal city. It's a great base for skiing, hiking, or generally exploring the Rocky Mountains region.
It takes about ten minutes to drive into downtown Missoula from the airport. The city is known for its confusing road system. Avoid confusion by choosing a car hire package that includes a sat-nav system. Alternatively, leave your car in the hotel car park while you explore the city on foot or by public transit. Save your petrol for discovering Missoula's gorgeous surroundings.
A great base for exploring the Bitterroot Mountains, Hamilton is home to some interesting old buildings such as Daly Mansion. There are some good craft breweries and interesting wineries nearby too.
It takes about an hour to drive into downtown Hamilton from Missoula Airport. You can park for up to 90 minutes in the city centre, after which you might find yourself with a $15 (about £10) fine. Unlimited free parking is available at the parking lot on the corner of Pinckney and Fourth streets, if you don't mind a short walk into the city centre.
The gateway to Flathead Valley and Glacier National Park makes an excellent base for an active holiday.
It takes about two hours to drive into downtown Kalispell from Missoula Airport. Parking in the city is usually free and widely available. We recommend booking a hotel with its own parking lot for added peace of mind.
