Where to hire a car at Miami International Airport
The car hire offices can be found in the Rental Car Centre, a short shuttle journey from the terminal. There are 16 companies to choose from. They are Advantage, Alamo, All Day Rent a Car, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, E-Z Rent a Car, Firefly, Hertz, National, Payless, P&P Family Auto Rental, Royal, Sixt and Thrifty.
Petrol stations near Miami International Airport
If you select a 'full to full' car rental agreement you will need to hand your car back with a full tank.
There are numerous petrol stations at the Rental Car Centre including Shell, Chevron and Citgo.
Driving around Miami International Airport
As soon as you leave the car rental centre you'll find yourself a sliproad leading onto the Airport Expressway. This toll road leads all the way into Miami Beach. Traffic can be fast and busy, so make sure you're comfortable with your car before leaving the parking lot. Automatic cars are more popular in America. If you're not used to them you might want to ask specifically for a manual transmission. Traffic in America drives on the right-hand side of the road, so keep your wits about you: especially when turning.
Getting to your destination
Cars are almost essential for an enjoyable trip to America, even if you're staying in the city. If you're flying into Miami Airport you can reach a number of interesting destinations. These are a few of our favourites.
With its art deco architecture, Latin American infused culture, and beautiful beaches, Miami has to be one of the world's most glamorous cities. Soak up the sun, enjoy gargantuan cocktails, and do a spot of people watching.
It takes about 15 minutes to drive into downtown Miami from the airport. Metered on-street parking is available, and there are plenty of municipal and privately owned parking lots. Parking is quite affordable. You can expect to pay about $1 (about 66p) per hour on Miami Beach. Flat-rates are usually offered for a full day of parking: usually about $15 (just under £10).
Nightlife on The Avenue, an arts scene in Pineapple Grove, and a huge public beach ensure the popularity of this gentrified beach town.
It takes about 55 minutes to drive to Delray Beach from Miami International Airport. Downtown is easily walkable, so once you park your car you can enjoy exploring. There are about two thousand parking spaces in downtown Delray Beach, both on-street and in car parks. There are two free car parks, which charge $5 (£3.30) after 4pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and if any special events are taking place.
Diving and fishing are two of the biggest past-times on the largest of the Florida Keys. Base yourself here and enjoy exploring the other islands, all connected by the Overseas Highway: one of our favourite American road trips.
It takes about an hour and ten minutes to drive to Key Largo from Miami International Airport. Most hotels have parking.
