Route 841 is the main road running by Launceston Airport. It provides a route to a number of major roads including route 1, which runs up to Launceston city and onto Devonport and also south to Hobart.

Tasmanian’s drive on the left hand side of the road, as we do in the UK. Roads around the island are uncrowded and provide some incredible scenery. Whilst the majority of Tasmania’s roads are two lane and uncongested, there is lots of steep and winding terrain. As a result, you should factor in extra time for your journey.

It’s wise to fill the tank regularly as petrol stations are sometimes few and far between particularly after 6pm when they’re liable to be closed.

Getting to your destination

Landing at Launceston Airport, there are lots of exciting destinations close by. Here are just a few of them:

Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania. Visitors can admire elegant colonial and Victorian architecture, relax in beautiful parks or soak up the culture at museums such as the Queen Victoria Art Gallery and the Launceston Tramway Museum. There’s lots of excellent food and drink on offer here too, with delicious, locally produced beers and wines as well as a range of international cuisine. Natural beauty is never far away in Tasmania and visitors can also find the impressive Cataract Gorge within walking distance of the city centre.

Launceston Airport to Launceston city centre is a 15 minute drive. Drivers should take route 841 north away from the airport and then pick up route 1 into the centre. There are a number of one way streets in the city centre but generally it’s easy to get around by car. However, when you do park up, main centre attractions are all within easy walking distance of each other and there’s a good selection of car parks and metered street spaces.

Mole Creek

Mole Creek is a small, picturesque town and a base from which to explore neighbouring national parks. The Mole Creek Caves, home to glow worms and underground streams, are a popular local attraction. There are also walking and cycling routes around the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, Westmorland Falls and Alum Cliffs Gorge.

Mole Creek is just under an hour’s drive from Launceston Airport, taking route 1 west. Visitors will find a range of parking options in the town and at attractions.

The beachside town of Bridport is popular with tourists and Tasmania residents looking to take a break from the city. It is home to white sandy beaches, nature reserves and Australia’s best golf course, the Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links.

It’s a 75 minute drive from Launceston Airport to Bridport, taking route 1 north through Launceston and then picking up the 883. As a navigational aid, it’s worth remembering that streets in the northern half of the town have male names and those in the south have female names.
