Roads around Costa Rica are blessed with beautiful scenery. Roads in cities and towns are likely to be well maintained. However, as you venture out into the countryside, you’ll come across poorer road conditions. As the country is mountainous, there are lots of winding single lane roads. If you get caught behind a large vehicle, this can add significant time to your journey so factor this in when planning.
In the rainy season, poorly surfaced roads can become even more difficult to navigate. A 4x4 vehicle is useful at this time of year.
Signposting on well-trodden tourist routes is good but if you’re venturing off the beaten track it can become non-existent so using a GPS system is a good idea.
