There’s an Exxon petrol station at the airport. It’s on the road for rental car drop off, so although it’s a little more expensive than local service stations it definitely wins on convenience.

Driving around Washington Dulles Airport

As soon as you leave the airport you’ll find yourself on the Dulles Toll Road, a large highway which connects to the I-495 (Capital Beltway). It’s likely that your hire car will be a left hand drive with an automatic transmission, so make sure you’re comfortable with the vehicle before jumping on the freeway.

It takes about 40 minutes to drive into downtown Washington DC from the airport. As in all large cities, parking in downtown DC can be tricky. There are some multi-storey car parks and metered spaces, but your best bet is to choose accommodation in Washington DC with private parking facilities. Some streets have rush hour restrictions, with no parking between 7am-9:30am and from 4pm-6:30pm.


The birthplace of Billie Holiday, John Waters, and the Star Spangled Banner, Baltimore is a gritty hidden gem packed with cultural attractions and trendy places to see and be seen.

It takes about an hour and ten minutes to drive to Baltimore from Washington Dulles Airport. There are plenty of multi-storey car parks in Baltimore, most of them beside the city’s major sights. You can pre-book your parking via the Parking Panda website: this can make life a lot easier. As always, we recommend choosing a hotel with a car park if you’re staying overnight.


Maryland’s State Capital has a wonderfully charming old quarter and a buzzing waterfront district. It’s the sailing capital of the USA, and home to the US Naval Academy, so don’t miss the chance for a boat trip.

It takes about an hour and five minutes to drive to Annapolis from the airport. As for parking, you can leave your car in a metered space for up to two hours and it costs $2 (about £1.30) per hour. If you want to leave your car a little longer there’s a good range of multi-storey and surface car parks. Prices vary.
