Rental companies may charge extra for drivers aged under 25, normally payable when you pick up your car. Age restrictions may apply in certain locations. Check the rental company's website before booking.

Car Hire from Bali (Denpasar) Airport

Car Hire from Bali Airport

Bali Airport is located in the south of Bali. Hiring a car from the airport is a great way to see more of the beautiful island and its more remote destinations. Wherever you choose to go, you’ll find idyllic beaches, lively backpacker communities and ancient Balinese history.

Where to hire a car at Bali Airport

Bali Airport doesn’t have a designated car rental area. Instead, car hire companies offer a meet and greet service, meeting passengers in the arrivals hall and transporting them to their closest office. Companies offering this service include Avis, Europcar and TRAC Astra Rent a Car.

Petrol Stations near Bali Airport

The closest petrol stations to Bali Airport are located around 20 minutes’ drive away. South of the airport, there’s a Pertamina garage. It can be found by turning onto the By Pass Ngurah Rai road and then turning right onto Jl. Uluwatu. Alternatively, north of the airport, there’s another Pertamina petrol station on Raya Sesetan.

Driving around Bali Airport

Bali Airport is located in the south of the island. There are two main routes running away from the airport. These are the By Pass Ngurah Rai road which travels north towards Denpasar before turning east and then north to avoid the city centre, and the Mandara Toll Road which offers a quicker but more expensive route away from the airport before joining with the By Pass Ngurah Rai south of Denpasar.

To drive in Indonesia, you’ll need an International Driving Permit. This is different to your standard international driving license. You can apply for a permit before you leave the UK. The RAC, the AA and the post office all process applications.

Driving in Bali is a bit of an adventure. Traffic can be chaotic and other drivers often pay little attention to road rules. Officially, drivers are supposed to drive on the left in Indonesia but in reality it’s often a bit of a free for all. Signposting and road conditions can also be poor so be prepared to take your time and watch out for the unexpected.

Getting to your destination

Bali Airport is located in the south of the island, the most popular region for visitors. With a hire car, here are some of the places it’s easy to get to:

Denpasar

Denpasar is the capital city of Bali. It’s not a tourist hotspot so visitors who do choose to stop here will get a taste of authentic Bali life. Throughout the city there are lots of ancient temples and palaces along with a number of museums where you can learn more about the city’s history.

It takes around 30 minutes to drive from Bali Airport to Denpasar, taking either the Mandara Toll Road or the By Pass Ngurah Rai road. The city is compact enough to explore on foot and, because of congestion and chaos on the roads, it’s a good idea to park up as soon as you can.

Kuta

Kuta is one of Bali’s most popular beach resorts. Its long sandy beach is great for sunbathing, swimming and surfing during the day and drinking and dancing at night. Tourists will find everything they need in Kuta. As well as shops, restaurants, tour operators and a lively nightlife, there are yoga centres, spas, diving schools and a large water park.

Kuta can be found just 15 minutes’ drive from Bali Airport. There are a number of roads heading north from the airport that will get you there but the most straightforward is probably the Raya Tuban road. With traffic jams a common problem, it’s wise to park your car before you reach the centre of Kuta and walk the rest of the way.

Seminyak

Seminyak is another beach resort, a little further up Bali’s western coast. It’s a more exclusive destination than Kuta with up-market accommodation, restaurants and bars. The beautiful beach is peaceful during the day. Visitors can go surfing, diving or bungee jumping and go exploring to discover local temples.

It takes around 25 minutes to reach Seminyak from Bali Airport, taking the By Pass Ngurah Rai road and then the Sunset Road. Roads are busy around the resort so, as with Kuta, it’s a good idea to leave the car as soon as you can.
