The D9 and E46 east both head in the direction of Caen and have connections to the A13 south towards Paris. The E46 west goes towards Cherbourg with the A84 heads south and west in the direction of Nantes. The N814 take a circular route around the south of Caen, with various routes going further south, including the A88 to Le Mans.

Caen

The city of Caen was founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and is home to historic abbeys and an ancient castle. Parc Festyland, a theme park for children, and Bayeux with its famous tapestry, are both less than 30 minutes’ drive away.

Driving from Caen Airport to Caen city centre will take around 15 minutes. The easiest route takes the D9 from the airport all the way into the city centre. There are various paid and free parking options in the city.

Le Havre

The town of Le Havre, located on the Seine estuary, was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. In the post-war period, it was redesigned by a modernist architect who created grand and striking concrete structures which would see the town designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is home to an art gallery down by the waterfront, a marina and a picturesque pebble beach. There’s also a 19th century fort with gardens and sea views.

It takes around 75 minutes to get to Le Havre from Caen Airport. Drivers should take the E46 north around Caen and then pick up the A13 heading north. There are a number of town centre car parks and some street parking, which is free on Sundays.

Granville

Granville sits on Normandy’s west coast. The small town was once a strategic port and has a dramatic rocky coastline. Visitors will also find an impressive gothic church, a museum with lots of local historical artefacts, and a major art gallery. Along the beach there are some wonderful fish restaurants, quaint white beach huts and a sailing school. There’s also a pink villa which was once the childhood home of fashion designer Christian Dior and now houses the Christian Dior Museum.

Granville is around 70 minutes’ drive from Caen Airport, taking the D9 left out of the airport and picking up signs to the A84. Granville is a small place so driving and parking around the town is easy.
