There are lots of petrol stations in proximity to the airport. There's a filling station on the airport road about 25 minutes drive south of the airport, as well as a number of petrol stops in the city itself.
Driving around Guangzhou Airport
There are lots of large and busy roads around the airport. You need a Chinese driving license to drive in China. If you don't have one, you can hire a car that comes complete with a driver. It takes just under 40 minutes to drive into Guangzhou from the airport. If you hire a car we recommend looking for hotels in Guangzhou with car parking as it can be tricky to find places to park on-street. The number of cars far outstrips the number of spaces, despite five large parking lots being built just a few years ago.

It takes about two hours to drive to Kaiping from Guangzhou Airport. Car parking is available in hotels and near the main attractions.
A special economic zone and UNESCO Creative City, Shenzhen is a popular destination thanks to its glitzy shopping malls and exciting theme parks. It's right next to Hong Kong, making it a popular transport hub for the area.
It takes just under two hours to drive to Shenzen from Guangzhou Airport. The city is quite congested, with an average urban speed of about 16mph on urban streets. Parking fees apply from 7am to 9:30pm, with a fee of 5 CNY (about 50p) for the first half hour and 10 CNY (roughly £1) for every following half hour.
