Where to hire a car at Birmingham Airport
There are nine car rental companies at Birmingham Airport. They are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Payless. All of the rental car desks can be found across from the terminal building in Zone C.
Petrol stations near Birmingham Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
There’s a Shell garage just outside the airport on Richard Arrington Jr Boulevard. There’s also a Chevron just under a mile away on the I-20.
Driving around Birmingham Airport
The I-59 interstate, from Georgia to Louisiana, runs past the airport with the I-20 (Texas to South Carolina). You will find yourself on a large and fast road almost as soon as you leave the airport, so make sure you’re comfortable with the controls of your rental car before setting off. The I-20 and I-59 intersect with the I-65 (Indiana to Alabama) in downtown Birmingham. This intersection is known as Malfunction Junction because it’s confusing and often has a lot of tail backs.
Getting to your destination
Civil rights history and plenty of interesting culture make the bustling blue collar town of Birmingham a surprisingly modern and interesting destination for a southern city break.
It only takes ten minutes to drive to Birmingham’s city centre from the airport. On-street parking in downtown Birmingham is metered during the week and free at weekends. Parking lots and garages run by the Birmingham Parking Authority generally charge a flat day rate of $8 (about £5.25) per car. There are plenty of hotels in Birmingham with guest car parks, perfect for giving you more peace of mind.
Home of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa has a vibrant nightlife and plenty of interesting history and culture. If you feel like some fresh air there are some great golf courses and the fantastic Lake Lurleen State Park.
It takes about an hour to drive to Tuscaloosa from Birmingham Airport. Parking is available throughout the town, with some free parking lots and on-street parking. The town can get busy during football season as people flock to the Bryant-Denny Stadium to watch the University of Alabama’s team.
The famous Talladega Superspeedway has put this city on the map as one of the top destinations for NASCAR racing.
It takes just under an hour to drive to Talladega from Birmingham Airport. There are lots of places to park around the famous speedway, and you’ll also find plenty of parking lots and on-street spaces in the city itself. Most of the accommodation in Talladega has guest car parking, it’s best to check before booking whether you need to pay a supplement.
