State Highway 25 passes the airport. There are a lot of large, busy roads surrounding the airport. We recommend searching for a car hire package that includes a sat-nav, to make getting around a little easier. India has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous countries to drive in, so be careful! Always drive defensively, keep your wits about you, and keep your eyes on the road. Like the UK, traffic in India drives on the left side of the road.

Home to the Golden Temple, the holiest building in the Sikh religion, the city of Amritsar is a favourite destination for pilgrims. Narrow streets and medieval buildings combine with typical Indian hustle to create one of the most atmospheric destinations in the Punjab.
It takes about 20 minutes to drive into downtown Amritsar from the airport, depending on traffic. Speaking of traffic, it can be quite hectic in the city: even in the new area of town which is characterised by wide boulevards. We recommend a lot of patience if you're planning on driving in Amritsar, otherwise look for hotels on the outskirts and take a rickshaw into the city.
A real foodie city, Jalandhar is a great place to get stuck into some Punjabi cuisine. If you're really missing British food, there are plenty of fast food restaurants in the city too. Great shopping and a variety of good bars add to the modern atmosphere.
It takes about an hour and a half to drive to Jalandhar from Amritsar Airport. It's a toll road, so make sure you have plenty of rupees.
It may be a small town, but Kapurthala offers lots in the way of interesting architecture, from temples to palaces. The nearby Kanjli Wetland is great if you want to escape the chaos and go boating or birdwatching.
It takes just over an hour and 45 minutes to drive to Kapurthala from Amritsar Airport.
