Airport Information

Cairns Airport is an international airport serving the major city of Cairns in Queensland, Australia. As Australia’s seventh-busiest airport, it handled almost 4.4 million passengers in 2015. The airport handles flights by various international and domestic airlines, including Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Philippine Airlines, SilkAir, and Air New Zealand. Major destinations from which passengers can take flights to Cairns include Singapore, Hong Kong, Denpasar, Auckland, Tokyo, Osaka, and Shanghai, to name a few. Cathay Pacific flies direct from Hong Kong to Cairns four times a week. Hong Kong passport holders should note that they have to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) pass online. The ETA allows the holder to visit Australia unlimited times for up to 3 months per visit, in a 12-month period for tourism or business purposes.


Terminal Information

The airport is made up of two terminals. Terminal 1 handles all international flights while Terminal 2 handles all domestic flights. The terminals are located about 200 metres away from each other, and were both recently refurbished. There is complimentary wireless Internet available for all passengers, as well as plenty of retail shops such as souvenir and gift shops, pharmacies, duty-free outlets, and bookstores. There are also abundant food options, including restaurants, cafes, and bars. There are also passenger lounges, and ample space for passengers to sit and rest. The Australian currency is the Australian dollar, and the prevailing exchange rate as of end December is AUD$1 to HK$5.59.

 How to Get Around

Buses hide 

The Sun Palm Transport Group operates shuttle bus services to hotels, the city centre, and the Northern beaches including Port Douglas and Palm Cove. Passengers may approach the shuttle bus booth located in the arrival halls of both terminals to purchase tickets to their desired destinations. 

Taxi hide 

Taxis are abundantly available outside both terminals. All taxis are metered, and the average taxi fare to the city centre is about AUD$25 (HK$140). Travel time varies according to traffic conditions but averages about 30 minutes.
