Flights to Vanuatu

Vanuatu (or the New Hebrides Islands) is an archipelago of 83 paradise islands in the South Pacific. As well as gorgeous beaches and tropical landscapes the islands are bursting with local culture, along with beautiful French and British colonial architecture. Just a few hours flight from Australia and New Zealand, the islands are quickly growing in popularity as a holiday destination.

Airports in Vanuatu

Bauerfield International Airport (VLI) is the main gateway to the islands and is the hub for Vanuatu’s flag carrying airline, Air Vanuatu. The airport is located on the island of Port Vila. The terminal is small, and although it’s functional, it’s probably best to avoid long layovers here.

There are a number of small, domestic airports spread throughout Vanuatu. Although it’s not possible to fly direct, you can catch domestic flights with Air Vanuatu from Bauerfield International Airport. Internal flights are available to the islands of Aniwa, Craig Cove, Dillon’s Bay, Emae, Ipota, Lamap, Lamen Bay, Longana, Luganville, Lonorore, Norsup, Paama, Noumea, Sola, South West Bay, Sara, Tongoa, Tanna, Torres, Valesdir, Ulei, and Walaha.

Airlines that fly to Vanuatu

There are no direct flights to Vanuatu from the UK, however it’s possible to take an indirect route with Singapore Airline, Virgin Australia, Emirates, Air Vanuatu, Air New Zealand, Qantas, British Airways and Aer Lingus. It’s likely that you’ll need to use a combination of airlines to reach your final destination, and a layover in either Australia or New Zealand is very likely.

Getting to your destination

Many of the hotels in Vanuatu will offer airport pick-up, so it’s worth confirming whether this is available while booking your accommodation. Taxis are also available outside the airport, and most of the drivers speak English as well as French. Fares are posted inside the terminal, so it’s a good idea to consult this before getting in a cab so you have a good idea of what you need to pay. Drivers accept Australian dollars as well as the local Vanuatu Vatu.

If you’re not staying on Port Vila there are ferries and water taxis to the other islands, in addition to  Air Vanuatu flights.
