Airports in Rio de Janeiro

Most flights to Rio de Janeiro land at Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG), which sits 20km outside of the city. It’s one of the busiest airports in Brazil, unsurprisingly, with over 17 million passengers passing through its doors each year. Many domestic flights also land at Santos Dumont Airport, which is near the downtown district of Rio de Janeiro.

International airlines flying into Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport include: Air France from Paris, Alitalia from Rome, British Airways from London, Condor from Frankfurt, Delta Airlines from Atlanta, Emirates from Dubai and Buenos Aires, Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa and Lome, Iberia from Madrid, KLM from Amsterdam, TAAG Angola Airlines from Luanda, TAP Portugal from Lisbon and Porto, United Airlines from Houston and Washington, and US Airways from Charlotte.

There are also a number of international flights from other South American countries: LAN Airlines from Santiago de Chile, Aerolineas Argenitinas from Buenos Aires, Avianca Peru from Lima, Avianca from Colombia, and Copa Airlines from Panama.

Domestic flights to Rio are operated by Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Gol Airlines, Passaredo Linhas Aereas, and TAM Airlines from other Brazilian cities such as Porto Alegre, Recife, and Brasilia. You can fly to Santos Dumont Airport with Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, Gol Airlines, and TAM Airlines from most major Brazilian cities.

Getting into Rio de Janeiro

From Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport you have a number of transport options. The yellow city taxis outside the arrivals hall run on a meter, and cost roughly R$50 to Ipanema and Copacabana, but it’s worth asking the driver for an estimate before leaving. You can also book private taxis from within the arrival hall: although these cars are generally better quality, the price is doubled. City buses 924 and 925 to the Ilha do Governador neighbourhood, and 915 to Bonsucesso, can be caught outside the terminal. There’s also an executive airport bus which serves both airports, run by the company Premium Auto Onibus. There are a few lines to choose from. Bus 2018 which leaves the international airport every half an hour and stops at Rio de Janeiro’s Central Bus Station, downtown, Santos Dumont Airport, the beaches in the Southern district, and the Alvorada Bus Terminal in the popular Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood. The bus runs between 5:30am and 11:30pm, and tickets cost around R$12. Bus 2918 takes a more direct route to Alvorada Bus Terminal and costs R$12, Bus 2101 is a direct bus to Santos Dumont Airport for passengers planning on catching a connecting flight to another Brazilian city, while bus 2145 stops at the Central Bus Station, Downtown, and Santos Dumont Airport and costs R$10.
