When Ali met Andy: a Blog(s) of the Month love story

She was a travel blogger, he was a travel blogger too. She was Alison Garland of Ali’s Adventures. He was Andy Couch, of Grounded Traveller. She needed help setting up hosting for her blog, so she issued a plea on Twitter. He offered to help. “That could have been the end of it”, says Ali. But it wasn’t.

Ali and Andy started chatting online; they fell in love. However, like all the best love stories, there was a snag: she lived in Georgia, USA, he lived in Germany. But, as in all the best Shakespeare plays (apart from Romeo & Juliet, and a few others), love conquers all. Expat American Andy assured Ali that the distance was ‘just a detail’ and so it proved to be: the Trans-Atlantic time difference was no boundary for them. “We couldn’t go on the traditional dinner and a movie date. Instead, we spent 6-8 hours talking non-stop each Saturday”, says Ali.

After months of chatting on Skype, Ali and Andy eventually met in person, in Prague, and their online romance blossomed. Six months later they got married. Ali is now an expat herself, as the happy couple live together in Germany, but continue to travel the world on their blogging adventures.

With her blog, self-confessed ‘travel addict’ Ali aims to show us how rewarding travel can be, encouraging us to get out there and see the world. She does a good job with her tips and tales from her travels to Asia Antarctica.

Andy’s blog well sums up what it’s like to be expat. In a blogosphere of go-getting adventurers, his down-to-earth attitude is engaging. He is not afraid to blog about the bad times, when life on the road far from home is hard – even if it because he is homesick for cheddar cheese!

On their fairy-tale romance, Ali says: “I still sometimes have moments of disbelief that a tweet led me to the man I am completely in love with. I feel like the luckiest person in the world that Andy actually saw that one tweet, and that we’re committed to being together.”

Love moves in mysterious ways, as they say.
