Get away for a break on a budget this autumn with our pick of five flights to France, Spain, Italy and Croatia, all less than £50.
1. Girona, Spain from £30
Its airport is offically called Girona-Costa Brava, while Ryanair call it Girona Barcelona, which both hint that most people head straight off to the beach or Barcelona. But Girona itself is very much worthy of your attention, especially now summer's heat has eased. Walk the walls of the city on the Passeig de la Muralla, pausing to rest among cacti like sprouting stars in the gardens opposite the Banys Àrabs (a 12th century bathhouse). Or walk the walk at night... spooky!
2. Pisa, Italy from £30
You can’t go to Pisa without getting a photo of you holding up the Leaning Tower. You may find yourself in a feature called ’10 cheesiest holiday photos’ but there’s a time and a place to be a total tourist, and that’s here. Photo opps aside, there is much more to do in this pretty, romantic Tuscan city. Like eat. Pick a place for pizza in Piazza dei Cavaleri or a tourist-free trattoria around Via San Martino, order a bottle of sun-nourished Suvereto and raise a tipsy toast to la dolce vita.
3. Santander, Spain from £34
Better known these days as one of the world's largest banks, Santander got its name from its home, the port city in Cantabria, northern Spain. One way of getting there is by ferry, from Portsmouth or Plymouth, which despite taking 20 hours, has its advantages, like the chance of seeing cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises). Or you could just take a short flight for a short break. Take a windswept walk up to Cabo Mayor lighthouse to earn a plate of rabas (fried calamari) and blow your entire holiday budget in neoclassical style at the Gran Casino del Sardinero.
4. Faro, Portugal from £34
Faro isn’t that far away! Oh dear. Far and away one of Europe's top autumn golfing destinations, you'll probably share the plane with a fair few men of a certain age in sleeveless pink Pringle jumpers. But you don't have to have a handicap of six to take a sunny late season break on the Algarve. And you should really stop on Faro itself on your way to the beach/pool/villa/golf course, even if it is just to take a stroll through its medieval streets and shop for a new jumper.
5. Zadar, Croatia from £30
Late season sun: the three magic words caress like a warm sea breeze along the Dalmatian coast. Where lies Zadar, a walled port in the same vein as the more-visited Dubrovnik further south. If you fancy a change from drinking wine and perusing menus studded with seafood, check out Krka National Park an hour inland. Swim in whirlpools, hike in wooded hills and keep an eye out for the 18 species of bats found in the park. Did you know there were 18 species of bats?! No? Oh well, back to that bottle of wine.
