Battery-powered plane unveiled

Aviation isn’t generally perceived as a planet-saving industry, but electric passenger planes may be coming to the skies near you soon. A test flight of the ‘Elektra One’ in 2011 proved the viability of electric planes, while at the recent Berlin Airshow recently Bauhaus Luftfahrt unveiled the Ce-Liner, with a C-shaped wing to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The people behind Ce-Liner predict that by 2040 it will have enough battery power to give it range of 1600 miles.

Meat this! Comedian goes on the road… with bacon

US comedian Josh Sankey is driving from LA to New York with no money, only bacon! Oscar Mayer, purveyor of hot dogs, luncheon meats… and bacon, has donated Josh 3000 pounds of the stuff, with which he has to barter for food, accommodation, everything, for his bid to find out if the USA loves its bacon even more than money. Follow Josh’s mad meat mission for yourself.

New iPhone game to keep you occupied in departures

Bored at the airport? Perhaps iPhone app Airport Scanner could keep you entertained? The 3million-selling allows you to can join US airport security in spotting weapons, while assisting first class passengers, and getting every flight out on time. Sounds tough, but according to reviews, it’s a very fun game.  It’s free so it may be worth a download and a go next time you are delayed in departures…

US airport feeling sheepish

Have you herd?! Following in the footsteps of smuggler-busting sniffer dogs and bird-scaring falcons, the latest non-human staff to join an airport payroll are… sheep. Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Georgia, USA is employing a flock of sheep. The animals’ unfussy eating habits are helping the airport cut costs on other kinds of maintenance such as chemicals, machines and manual labour.

Finnish restaurant goes underground

Lohja, a town in Finland has opened a pop-up (or should we say pop down?) restaurant experience with a difference - 80 metres underground in a former limestone mine. Not for claustrophobics obviously, but definitely for gourmets, Muru serves food based on the theme of Elemental Earth. At just over £100 a head, it’s not cheap, and if you want to book a table, you’ll have to be quick as it’s only open until next week!
