You don’t even have to select a destination – just select September and search for Everywhere to get inspiration on where to go. Here are a seven of the best September sun flights, starting at only £40 return.
1. Cap d’Agde, France from £40
Average September max. temperature: 25°C
Average September Sun hours: 8
You think of the south of France, you think the Cote d’Azur, casinos and billionaires’ yachts. But there's more to the French Med than the Riviera. There are still yachts and casinos in Cap d’Agde, but your pre-dinner flute of bubbly on the front will cost a lot less. Actually, you’re better off buying a €4 job from the supermarket and swigging from the bottle as you pick which yacht you’d like as you soak up the evening sunshine. The nearest airport is Beziers, half an hour away.
2. Majorca, Spain from £54
Average September max. temperature: 28°C
Average September Sun hours: 5
Average sunshine hours fall fast in the Balearics from eight in August to five in September, but the temperature is still pretty pleasant to say the least. Five hours on the beach for a few days will sort you right out. If you’re not a beach person, Majorca is also ace for walking. Most popular is the main mountain chain, the Serra de Tramuntana along the north coast, but there are also lower level coastal walks from which taking a break for a dip is compulsory.
3. The Algarve, Portugal from £81
Average September max. temperature: 23°C
Average September Sun hours: 9
It is a common sight in the airport check-in lounge: a party of men of a certain age (usually on the more senior side, but there are an increasing number of whippersnappers) in slacks, polo shirts, and pink jumpers best carried off by a bloke of about 61 with leathery tan and white, or perhaps unnaturally yellow hair who look like Denis Law. If it’s not Marbella this year, they’ll be off to the Algarve for their annual golf trip for a few rounds (Quinta do Lago maybe?), a few in the 19th and a spot of sunshine before reconvening at Troon, Gullane, Sandwich or Lytham St. Annes. Sounds alright, doesn’t it?
4. Zadar, Croatia from £51
Average September max. temperature: 21°C
Average September Sun hours: 10
While Croatia's secret is well and truly out, Zadar has not let all the late nights show and, despite the cruise ships and annual influx of visitors, is still gorgeous. It also enjoys a whacking great 10 sunshine hours a day In September, when you’ll have that wander round the Old Town to yourself and there’ll be plenty of space on the beach at Puntamika or Borik. And whatever you do, don’t miss the bizarre attraction that is the sea organ (in the pic at the top of the page).
5. Costa Brava, Spain from £40
Average September max. temperature: 26°C
Average September Sun hours: 10
The buckets and spades won’t have all been packed away, but by September the hordes will have left the beaches of the Costa Brava to you. If you’d like to see the secret side of the famous Costa, seek out Begur. This bijou spot is where trendy types from Barcelona luxe it up in boutique hotels and fine seafood restaurants, so join them and be merry. Fly to Gerona to best access the coast.
6. Jersey, Channel Islands from £55
Average September max. temperature: 16°C
Average September Sun hours: 3
Well, you never know. You could be lucky with the weather: an Indian summer and there’s no need to fly further than the Channel Islands for September sun and beach fun. As well as beaches, Jersey is attractive for many more reasons – it’s a tax haven, and the ideal port of call for parking one’s yacht. But seriously, there’s also stuff like countryside, cycling, walking, seafood, history. Or if Jersey is too hectic for you, there’s always Sark.
