If you yearn to be more adventurous with your city breaks, how about the Romanian capital? Stand on the site of momentous history in Revolution Square, admire grand architecture like the massive Palace of Parliament and Bucharest’s very own Arch of Triumph (yes, it looks like the one in Paris), and chill out in Communist-era Herastrau Park.
The Reichstag, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Museum Island... once you’ve done enough sightseeing for the day - and there’s plenty of that to do in the German capital
- get the party started with a beer at a beach bar
beside the River Spree and see where the evening
takes you. You may not remember, but it’ll be fun.
Milan’s low-cost airport is in just the right place for visiting the lovely city of Bergamo – a low-key alternative to Milan itself. Wander the winding streets up to the città alta then hop on the funicular to the hilltop village of San Vigilio. Sip a white wine and Campari rosso lanterna – the favourite local aperitif – before indulging in dinner.
While away lazy lunchtimes and long evenings in this pretty medieval port ogling the yachts over a bottle of chilled rosé and a seafood platter with the works. Work up an appetite with a swim and game of French
cricket on the sands - take a boat trip out to
Île d’Aix in search of some of the best
beaches in France.
Even if you haven’t got kids in tow, or you’re not a physics buff, break on through to the fun side of science at NEMO – housed in a spectacular ship-shaped building in Amsterdam’s docks. After all that stimulation, go downtempo with drinks at funky nightspot Tolhuisten, with its secret garden great for al fresco summer good times.
Who needs summer anyway? Book ahead for next winter with an exotic yet accessible, affordable getaway to the mazey, mind-boggling city of Marrakech with its medinas, bazaars and Hammams. Winter days are warm and sunny,
making it most pleasant to stroll around Menara
Gardens, from where you’ll get a grandstand
view of the majestic, snow-capped Atlas Mountains.
