Belgrade is finding its place in new Europe and is a thrilling and surprising place to visit. Soviet-style architecture mingles with the grand and opulent, pedestrian streets groan with bookshops and cafes, while the bohemian quarter, Sardarska, throngs with locals. Join them for a Jelen beer or two, and a meal of grilled meat – a dish that Serbians do very well.
Gateway to the Istria peninsular, Pula is known for its warm climate, calm seas and unspoiled natural environment. It’s also home to the Pula Arena – one of the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world, where at one time, gladiators would have battled it out. Croatia is a great alternative to Spain, so why not give Pula a go!
Instead of heading to southern Spain, why not try the north? The Asturias region is home to Oviedo, the historic capital city of the Asturias region, and Gijon, a coastal town with its many fishing villages and beaches. For an even cooler experience, try the mountain range of Picos de Europa national park, 20km from the coast. And if you want to see more of undiscovered Spain, check out our Secret Spain suggestions.
Prague is so passé these days, so bypass the Czech capital and give Brno a go for a top budget break. Make a flying visit to memorabilia-stuffed Air Café and get lots more recommendations at Brno Now. You’ll be raving about the Moravia region once you’ve Czech-ed out the Republic’s second city.
Eternally popular Amsterdam is a great city for a weekend getaway. Amsterdam lives a dual existence; the ample coffee shops and red light districts are a garden of forbidden delights but it’s also a high-class city with top museums, galleries and concert venues, not to mention beautiful architecture and an incredible canal system. Best explored by bike, boat or on foot, snag a great deal on flights and enjoy a few days in ‘The Dam’.
