Book yourself a place in the sun. Here are six sunny short-haul destinations which you can fly to in just a couple of hours... all with return flights starting at under £50.
1. La Rochelle, France from £41
La Rochelle, on France’s Atlantic coast, is one of the closest places you can fly to for summer sun. It's far enough south for warm weather (hopefully!), but without the attitude and the prices of the Riviera. What's more, it's got superb seafood, a medieval port and cracking beaches a short boat trip away on the Île d’Aix.
2. Perpignan, France from £34
It’s the Med, but not as we know it. As hot and sunny as the Costa Brava, France’s Côte Vermeille is just up the coast from its much more popular Spanish equivalents. The family-friendly resort of Argelès-sur-Mer, with its mega sandy beach and seaside fun by the bucket 'n’ spade load, is just 20 minutes from Perpignan.
3. Zadar, Croatia from £37
From being a destination for the more adventurous traveller only a few years ago, Croatia is now well and truly on the beach tourist radar for summer sun. Zadar on the Dalmatian coast is still relatively undeveloped. With flights as cheap as this, that mightn’t last for long, so go now!
4. Berlin, Germany from £39
Berlin may not spring to mind as a beach destination, but when the sun has got its hat on, the Berliners come out to play at the city’s ‘beach bars’, many complete with sand, palm trees and sun loungers, or there's the Badeschiff - a floating open-air swimming pool moored in the River Spree. Spend a lazy afternoon chilling with a beer or two, or possibly something sunnier, like a pina colada? The party gets going after dark in the many riverside bars, like the Strand Bar, pictured here.
5. Costa Brava, Spain from £34
The Costa Brava, with its resorts such as Blanes, Tossa de Mar, and Lloret de Mar, ticks all the boxes for a summer family holiday, like beaches, waterparks and guaranteed sunshine. If you feel the urge to do something a little more cultural than building sandcastles, take a wander around historic Gerona.
6. Ibiza, Spain from £50
Ibiza in summer does not just mean clubbing and heavy-duty drinking by Brits abroad. The White Isle hides away several of the best coves and playas in the Balearics, so seek out its secret, secluded, seductive beaches, like Cala Xarraca and Cala de Saint Vincent (pictured), a world away from the bright lights of San Antonio.
