Cool? Oh yes. Cheap? Definitely. Euro hipster guests and even trendier staff, live bands and beer in the hotel courtyard, basic but very funky bedrooms, a great location in alternative chic East Berlin, and all-in-all tremendous value. Best feature has to be the all-the-pastries-and-herrings-you-can-eat buffet breakfast that will set you up for a day's sightseeing, or just hanging out with the hipsters.

2. The romantic weekender - Hotel du Panthéon, Paris
One of several stylish hotels in the Hotels Paris Rive Gauche collection, the Pantheon would be quintessentially Parisian if it was in Montmartre, but it's location 10 minutes' walk from the Seine - is even better. The hotel overlooks its namesake, the Panthéon – one of Paris’ lesser-known but most dramatic buildings. Good quality, great value budget accommodation in Amsterdam can be hard to find, but the Bohème is a sure bet for an inexpensive break.
