Providence has all of the cosmopolitan charm of a big city combined with the friendliness of a small town. It’s a small city, and is easy to get around on foot. Most of the accommodation can be found in the downtown neighbourhoods. There’s something for every budget in Providence, from charming B&Bs and boutique guesthouses to glitzy hotels and big American chains.

Providence is home to two famous academic institutions: Brown University, and the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. The city’s student population ensure that there’s always something exciting going on, whether it’s an exciting new art show or the opening of a hip new bar. There’s a great live music scene, and plenty of nightlife: from chilled out pubs to throbbing techno clubs.

Providence is one of the oldest cities in America, and Downcity is where you’ll find most of the city’s 18th and 19th Century architecture. This is a buzzing, commercial neighbourhood, with a large mall and the city’s main transport hub: Kennedy Plaza.

Downcity is also home to Waterplace Park, which was formed when two rivers were diverted. During the summer the park plays host to WaterFire, a series of nightly bonfire parties. There are some great art galleries and museums in Downcity, and it’s where most people choose to base themselves during a trip to Providence.

If you enjoy eclectic nightlife and quirky shopping, look for hotels College Hill. This is where Providence’s students tend to hang out, and is where you’ll find the hippest places to eat and drink. There are also some excellent shops here, with a good selection of independent boutiques and second hand clothing stores.

Federal Hill is a fantastic neighbourhood for foodies. This area of town has restaurants to suit every taste and budget, whether you’re looking for contemporary American cooking, or something a little more exotic. There are some great Cuban, Asian, Mediterranean and Indian restaurants to choose from. Accommodation options in this part of town are limited, but it’s well within walking distance of Downcity.
