Hotels in Bar Harbor

Hotels in Bar Harbor make the perfect base for a holiday on Mount Desert Island. Boasting gorgeous hiking trails through Acadia National Park, top notch whale watching and sailing in the Gulf of Maine, and plenty of fantastic golf courses, Mount Desert Island is an excellent destination for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Bar Harbor has been popular with tourists since the 19th Century, when it was one of the most popular resort towns on the East Coast. Although WWII and a huge forest fire during the 1940’s damaged tourism in the area, today Bar Harbor is back on top as one of New England’s best loved summer destinations. It’s a great place to enjoy outdoor activities, or simply to relax and enjoy the New England sunshine.

Bar Harbor’s lively downtown district is packed full of places to eat, drink and be merry. There are old fashioned ice cream shops, vibrant bars offering excellent happy hour deals, and a huge range of restaurants. While American food reigns supreme, you can still get your hands on French, Mexican and Italian fare.

The nightlife in Bar Harbor is relatively low key, with a good range of bars and grillhouses where you can whet your whistle. Craft beer enthusiasts will be interested to note that Bar Harbour has three microbreweries. Given the town’s small year-round population, it’s definitely a contender for highest number of breweries per capita in the USA.

As tourism is the primary industry in Bar Harbor there are plenty of hotels, B&Bs, guesthouses and other accommodation options to choose from. The high season lasts from June until August, when summer is in full swing and people enjoy spending lazy days relaxing by the coast. Room prices can be higher during summer as there’s such high demand.

Bar Harbor also has a small visitor boom from the end of September until mid-October, when the fall foliage is at its best. Thousands of people flock to New England each year to admire the brightly coloured autumn leaves, so if you’re planning on visiting Bar Harbor at this time of year it’s a good idea to book your rooms well in advance.
