Known affectionately as just ‘Azul’, Azul Brazilian Airlines is one of Brazil’s flag carriers. It’s the baby of David Neeleman, the founder of JetBlue Airways, who launched the new airline at the end of 2008. The airline follows JetBlue’s “no-frills chic” model, offering cheap flights with a difference. The name was chosen during a contest, narrowly pipping ‘Samba’ to the post. Azul flies to over 100 destinations, including a few underserved markets, making it a great choice for travellers who want to see a lot more of Brazil. In 2012 they bought the regional airline TRIP, and in May 2014 the companies merged fully.
How to Check In
Like most modern airlines you can check in online, by mobile, or at the counter in the airport. Mobile check in is available via the Azul app and also via SMS. Both online and mobile check in are available from 48 hours to 90 minutes before your flight is due to depart, and earn you 250 frequent flyer points.
Baggage Allowance and Fees
Each passenger is entitled to check one piece of luggage weighing up to 23kg into the hold. Excess baggage is charged a penalty fine per kilo. Excess baggage such as sports equipment falls into your 23kg weight limit, so be careful.
Seating – Leg Room, Choosing Seats
Seats at the front of the plane have extra legroom. You can pay an extra fee to reserve one of these seats, or buy an Azul Plus ticket when you book your flight for guaranteed extra comfort. The standard economy seats offer a fair amount of legroom, with a 31” seat pitch.
Government levies are charged on some routes. This should be shown clearly when you book your flight.
Meals, Snacks, Drinks
Free snacks and non-alcoholic drinks are available on all routes. There’s a choice of eight tasty snacks to choose from, including donuts, gummy aeroplane sweets, crisps, and savoury biscuits.
Azul Brazilian Airlines have a great history for punctuality, and won the 2013 FlightStats award for “Most Punctual Airline in South America.”
